Discover the city’s unusual treasures and explore Bay Area backroads with 13 road trips to choose from. This MAD map will take you on a custom tour of San Francisco — as only the locals know it. Venture onto some of the steepest streets in the world and then find your way onto breathtaking scenic byways.
For this part of your California Dreamin’ vacation, remember to bring a sweater if you plan on taking a stroll or to dress in layers if you plan on touring by motorcycle. Mark Twain said it best when he said, “the coldest winter I ever spent was my summer in San Francisco.”
Begin your mini-vacation by first exploring what the city has to offer. Tour Fisherman’s Wharf, wind your way down the crookedest street in the world, or visit the bisons in Golden Gate Park. When the fog rolls in, check out Zeitgeist where “the beer is warm and the women are cold” or stop in at Liverpool Lil’s for authentic fish-n-chips.
After a chat with the locals, travel north across the Golden Gate Bridge for a scenic drive into the beautiful Marin Headlands. To your left, is the great expanse of the Pacific Ocean and on the right, a gorgeous view of the San Francisco Bay, Angel Island, and Alcatraz. Follow the coastline north, head off on the back roads, and stop for breakfast in Stinson Beach. Try the Parkside Cafe — a local landmark.
Continue north along the coast on two-lane curvy roads lined with Eucalyptus and Cypress trees. When you get to the town of Marshall, drop in at Tony’s Oyster Bar, a must stop for motorcyclists and a great place for everyone to enjoy BBQ’d oysters.
Heading South from San Francisco, follow driving directions for a tour on roads favored by motorcycle riders towards Alice’s Restaurant. No, it’s not the one that Arlo Guthrie sings about but just as fun! After refueling (your body and your gas tank), continue on a scenic tour all the way to the beaches of Santa Cruz.
Not ready to head back home yet? Continue your road trip further south to Monterey Bay and then Big Sur. On the way back, stop by the Moss Beach Distillery and snuggle under a blanket on the patio to watch the sunset. Too tired to make it all the way home? Head back a few miles and sleep under the stars at Half Moon Bay State Beach for a taste of California camping or spend a cozy night at the Mill Rose Inn.
If you’re searching for ATV trails, you may want to travel east from San Francisco, where you’ll escape the city on some of the most beautiful, sweeping, empty roads in the area. Cruise to the top of Mount Davidson or visit the Mt. Hamilton Observatory. There’s also plenty of off-road activity out here, so prepare to get down and dirty.
With these and many more options to choose from, it’s up to you.
